The first volume presents work by several different artists, mostly named, including members of the Sioux, Shoshone, and Kiowa tribes, with depictions of costume, heraldry, hunting, and ceremony. The second volume presents work by Amos Bad Heart Buffalo, an Ogala Sioux who served as a cowboy and as an Indian policeman, and whose art depicts the schematics and customs of his people, with origins traceable to prehistoric pictography.
