An incredible complete suite of 87 hand-colored lithographed political cartoons and caricatures from the time of the end of the Franco-Prussian War, the siege of Paris, the Paris Commune, and the Armistice of Versailles, depicting important historical figures and current events, by a range of French illustrators including Dutasta, Baudet, Klenck, Vidal, Faustin, Renaux, La Tremblais, Morsabeau, Lejeune, Bar, Corseaux, and Frévile, each captioned below the image and most with the illustrator's signature within the plate. Some very minor scattered foxing and toning, some sheets with small corner creases, overall excellent. Sml. folio, sheet size approx. 15 1/4" x 11 1/4". Modern half-calf box portfolio with marbled boards, contents loose as issued. Paris (Chez Grognet) 1871.
The caricatures which comprise this group are an important historical document from a time of great political and social upheaval in Paris. Although they exist in digital versions, physical copies of the original lithographs are quite rare, especially a complete set. Incredibly scarce; as of January 2017, WorldCat locates only one physical copy in North America. Book ID: 48610
