28-leaf portfolio of art prints made from the Culture Hero special issue, "Jill Johnston Exposed", each page of the issue enlarged and reproduced on heavy paper stock lithographed by aluminum plates and split fountain rainbow rolled over in over 150 colors. Illustrated throughout. Large folio, each individual page measures approx. 23 by 17 inches. Original black and white printed cardboard portfolio covers, professionally repaired, bound with three metal screw fasteners and designed so that each page can be individually removed and framed. Some minor soiling and edgewear. New York (Editions Alecto of America, Ltd.) 1970. The first and last pages of the portfolio are signed and dated Les Levine 70.
Les Levine published five issues of the journal Culture Hero: A Fanzine of Stars of the Super World, a satirical and gossipy tabloid serial devoted to New York City's downtown art scene. This portfolio is a special large-format reproduction of the third issue devoted to Jill Johnston (February 1970), which was subtitled "A life dominated by Strange Arts, Consuming Desires, and Ego-Eroticism". Johnston was a dance critic for the Village Voice and Art News and an important figure in New York's avant-garde. Among the contributors to this issue were Lucas Samaras, Gregory Battcock, David Bourdon, Yvonne Rainer, Remy Charlip, Walter Gutman, Brigid Polk, Wynn Chamberlain, Teeny Duchamp, Rosalyn Drexler, Helen Ansell, Kenneth King, Ann Wilson, Stephen Dunn, Jasper Johns, Barbara Forst, Andy Warhol, James Lee Byars, and others. The front cover of the portfolio contains blurbs and reviews of the volume, including one from Phyllis Derfner, an employee at MOMA, which reads, "One of the major books of the decade. A great print-maker at the absolute peak of his form. Whether your primary interest is in Les Levine, the state-of-the-revolution or pure-ass dynamite printmaking, Culture Hero Masterprints, is simply not to be missed." Book ID: 49005
